Workplace Wednesday: Galaxy Nails

Get ready for a picture-heavy post! I thought I’d spruce up this week’s Workplace Wednesday with a bold look– on last week’s introduction to the Workplace Wednesdays series, a reader requested that I do a post on galaxy-inspired nails, perfect for the fashionistas in the working world who adore dark manicures :)

I began creating this look with a single thick coat of Fiore from Julep on each nail. Although Julep describes Fiore as an espresso shade, I think of it more as a deep grayish-purple:

After the polish dried completely, I took a makeup sponge and ripped it into several pieces. Then, I chose five different colored polishes. I used metallic ones so that they’d provide the mani with a shimmery glow, but they don’t have to be metallic!

Purple: Unnamed polish from L.A. Colors

Blue: Light Blue from Love & Beauty by Forever 21

Green: Lady Luck from H&M

Silver: You’re Too Good For Him from Craze by Wet ‘n Wild

Pink: Unnamed polish from L.A. Colors

Starting with the purple polish and ending with the pink, I used a piece of makeup sponge to lightly sponge each color diagonally across each nail. The best part about doing a galaxy design is that there’s no need for perfection– no matter how you sponge on each color, it’ll still turn out as a beautiful galaxy-inspired mani :) To complete this look, I took a toothpick to place a couple of glitter flecks on each nail. And voila!

Workplace Wednesday: Extreme Ruffian

Workplace Wednesday-01

I am so excited to introduce ‘Workplace Wednesdays’ to the blog– dedicated to a day that celebrates working women everywhere and our right to a fabulous manicure. These posts will feature simple do-it-yourself nail designs that both make a statement and are appropriate for the workplace. Today’s feature is the ‘extreme ruffian,’ introduced by the Ruffian team on their Spring 2014 runway.

This manicure features a nude (Khaki from Love & Beauty by Forever 21) paired with a pop of teal (Rise And Shine from Sinful Colors). I began by applying a medium coat of Rise And Shine to each nail and allowed the polish to dry fully. Using Khaki and its provided polish brush, I carefully applied a thin coat of the color to each nail, allowing about 1-2 mm of teal to remain visible around the nail. After applying a second coat of nude polish and allowing it to dry fully, I used a very thin acrylic paint brush to touch-up the curve, dipping it in the teal polish and using careful strokes to perfect the nude curve. I left one nail without the ruffian design to act as the accent nail:

What kind of design would you like to see next? It can be anything– from a simple swatch of a great nude, black or white to a galaxy nail design!

Quickie Post: Happy Belated Valentine’s Day!

I knew that when I completed my “official” Valentine’s Day mani on Thursday evening, there would be a 98% chance it wouldn’t be uploaded until the following week. Well, the forecast was pretty accurate ;)

But, that just means that this weekend was jam-packed with lots of fun and love to celebrate the Valentine’s Day weekend!

For this design, I used Khaki from Love & Beauty by Forever 21 as the base, applying two coats to each nail. When the polish dried, I took a page from an old novel and tore it into pieces large enough to cover each nail fully. I soaked a cotton ball with alcohol and placed it over the piece covering my nail for about ten seconds, carefully peeling the page from my nail to reveal the text transfer. When I completed this process on all of my nails, I used a toothpick and bottle of gold glitter nail polish to write out the word ‘love’. Such a simple design, but I just love the way it turned out– it was exactly what I was hoping for!

That’s it for today– I’m a little behind on the swatching, but you’ll hear back from me soon :) I hope you had a fabulous Valentine’s Day and a wonderful weekend!

Julia By Shimmer Polish

*Disclosure: The product featured in this post was provided by the manufacturer for review.

Last week, I asked A to help me pick a color to swatch. Thinking he was being funny, he responded with, “Icy blue pearl,” thinking I wouldn’t have such a color– but I did! Light Blue from Love & Beauty by Forever 21 is totally an icy, pearly blue:

I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to swatch another one of the colors in my Shimmer Polish collection, particularly JuliaJulia is a pretty light blue glitter-filled polish, with subtle flecks of what I can only describe as a light green glitter. It paired perfectly with Light Blue!

I was so happy with the results that I ended up wearing it much longer than usual :) Cindy really has an amazing recipe for these Shimmer Polishes, I am so in love with the three that I’ve swatched so far, and I CANNOT WAIT to show you the rest!

Granite Nails – Last Photos From ‘@thisjenngirl’!

BIG NEWS! As the blog and Facebook page are growing more than ever, I’ve decided to create a nails-only account on Instagram so that those who enjoy my nail art aren’t bored by snapshots of my personal life, and those that know me best (particularly the men in my life) don’t have to keep seeing nails that they just really aren’t interested in, hehe.

So please, support Polished PR by following my passion for nail polish and PR at @polishedpr on Instagram :)

With that, I leave you with the last manicure photos watermarked with ‘@thisjenngirl‘:

I wanted to do something fun and simple, and saran wrap manis have ‘fun and simple’ written all over them! A couple of weeks ago, I stopped by my local CVS to see if they had any steals on nail polish during their 50%/75% off markdown event that they normally do from time to time. Sure enough, they had Spanish Moss from Revlon Colorstay (my favorite!) with a 75% off sticker on it! For the base, I applied two coats of Spanish Moss and waited until completely dry before putting droplets of Khaki from Love & Beauty by Forever 21 on top and smudging it gently with crumpled up saran wrap.

What I thought would look like your normal marbleized nail design actually ended up looking a lot like granite– and oddly enough, matched the granite countertops that we have in the kitchen– hah!

I’m super excited for Polished PR’s bright future and I just want to take the time to say thank you for being a part of it <3 You’re one the reasons why this blog has become what it is, I couldn’t be more grateful.

Until next time! xo

Updates Galore

Oy, I am slowly heading into the bad blogger zone and need to pull myself out! This post is a combination of long overdue Halloween posts, updates from the weekend and what you can expect from Polished PR this month.

For starters, the lovely Xin Yu from Lacquered By Blue Vanilla asked me to put together a Halloween-themed mani for the blog’s 11 Days of Halloween Guest Post Week. So, I put together a design incorporating ghost eyes, spider webs and candy corn. Since I had put together this guest post in mid-October, I took off the design immediately after submitting in my photos– I didn’t want people thinking that I was super pumped for Halloween ;)

When Halloween week did end up coming around, I refreshed the mani with some fun Shany stamping and a combination of black + orange + purple polishes (Charcoal by Love & Beauty + Mango Madness by e.l.f. + an unnamed metallic purple from LA Colors’ Color Craze Modern Metallics collection):

On Halloween afternoon, I went to the nail salon to get a pedicure and (gasp!) my first manicure to hurriedly prepare for a beach wedding that I’d be attending on Friday. I’m a sucker for pedis– it’s nice to be able to get soft, pampered feet while experiencing a nice mechanical back massage versus getting soft, pampered feet while experiencing back pain associated with doing it yourself. As for that manicure, I was so disappointed. I don’t know what I was expecting– maybe that they’d miraculously provide me with smooth soft hands and perfect cuticles? WRONG. <Begin rant> I spent $13 for a sub-par mani with polish covering some of my cuticles! And if you know my perfectionist ways, my OCD-radar was going off like crazy, and the moment I got home, I whipped out my paintbrush and acetone and cleaned those babies up! Never again will I betray my nail art ways and spend money to have someone else do my nails. <End rant> After the clean-up, the mani looked great– I was so rushed at the salon, though, that I didn’t even think to look at the names of the colors I chose, I do know that they’re both OPI.

And about that beach wedding– GORGEOUS. They couldn’t have picked a more perfect day! High in the mid-80s with a beautiful coastal breeze :)

Anddd you’re finally reaching the end of this post (if I’m even lucky to have kept your attention that long, anyway). What can you expect from me this month? I’m going to be crazy busy with school, the hunt for the perfect full-time career and more, so I’ll have some great autumn-inspired guest posts ready for your viewing throughout the month. But I will be sure to come out of hiding whenever I get the chance and update you every now and then :)

Until next time! xo
